Getting Started With SEO: Keywords

Recently we shared tips on how to get started with search engine optimization (SEO). Today we’re taking it one step further and sharing some tips on keyword research and placement to properly optimize your website.

Before you begin optimizing any part of your website content, you have to decide what you are optimizing for. When you decide on a solid list of 20-30 relevant key phrases you want to rank for, they should be displayed naturally in every possible place of your site.

This includes:

  • Web Page URLs

  • Website Menu Items

  • <Page Title>

  • Heading (“H1”)

  • Subheadings (“H2”, “H3”)

  • Body of content

  • Meta Description

  • Title Tag

  • Alt text

Let’s see what this looks like in a real life example:

For your page URL’s & Menu items:

-Each page URL should include your targeted keyphrase, as such:

You can also see in this image that the meta description, “New to SEO?...” has the keyphrase “SEO” in it, as well as the title tag of the web page, “SEO: The Free Beginner’s Guide From Moz”

When you click on that link, it takes you to a page that looks like this. (We’ve highlighted in red a few target keyphrases that they may have used)

Don’t forget Alt Text!

Google cannot “see” the images you place on your website and blog. In order for the Google bots to be able to display your image with the right search query, you must include alt text with your images, including the term you want to appear for.

For example, if you are an event caterer using images of your most popular pasta dish, your alt image could be something like the name of the dish to ensure it shows up in the image results on Google.

SEO can be intimidating and a bit confusing. For the best results, you should consider partnering with an expert SEO firm to take care of your online ranking.

Feel free to ask any further questions below and we will include them in the next post!
